Meesho Scam After Payment? What to Do If You Lost Money

Legal information notice: this article provides general information and isn't a substitute for advice from a qualified lawyer.

You paid on Meesho and the product never came, the refund you were promised didn’t land, or a “Meesho executive” phoned you and money left your account. These are three different problems, and mixing them up wastes time. Here is how to work out which one you have and what to do about it.

The Three Things People Mean by “Meesho Scam”

  • A genuine order that went wrong — non-delivery, wrong or poor-quality item, or a refund that hasn’t arrived. This is a consumer-rights problem, not fraud
  • Fake customer care — a number found through search that asks for an OTP, UPI PIN, or a remote-access app. This is fraud
  • Fake “Meesho” schemes — reselling, work-from-home, or “order task” offers on WhatsApp or Telegram, and phishing links about orders

What Meesho Itself Advises

Meesho has acknowledged that its name is misused to collect personal information and cheat customers. It advises never sharing bank details such as OTP, UPI or ATM PIN, CVV, or card details with anyone claiming to be a Meesho representative, and asks that misuse of its name be reported to legalsupport@meesho.com.

A Warning From Reported Cases

News reports have described people losing large sums after calling a fake customer-care number found on Google to chase a small refund. Small refund amounts are used deliberately — the low value makes people less careful about who they’re speaking to.

What to Do, in Order

01
Work Out Which Problem You Have
Genuine order issue, or fraud
02
If Money Was Taken, Call Your Bank
Block cards and UPI at once
03
Report on cybercrime.gov.in
Or call 1930
04
If It Was a Genuine Order Issue
Grievance officer, then NCH 1915
05
Escalate to the Consumer Commission
Through the e-Jagriti portal
Step 1: Decide Whether It's Fraud or a Genuine Dispute

If someone called or messaged you and took money or codes, it’s fraud. If the order itself failed through the app and no one contacted you, it’s a consumer dispute.

Step 2: For Fraud, Call Your Bank First

Block your card and UPI, and report every unauthorised debit with date, time, and amount. Prompt reporting affects how much protection you get under RBI’s rules.

Step 3: File a Cyber Crime Complaint

Report at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930, including the number, any links or APK files, and screenshots.

Step 4: For a Genuine Order Problem, Use the Formal Route

Complain to the platform’s grievance officer (acknowledgement is due within 48 hours, resolution within one month under the E-Commerce Rules), and call the National Consumer Helpline on 1915.

Step 5: Take It to the Consumer Commission if Needed

File on the e-Jagriti portal within two years. You can do this yourself without a lawyer.

If a caller made you install an app, treat the phone as compromised: uninstall the app, disconnect from the internet, and change passwords from another device. Some of these scams use a malicious APK to get remote access to the phone.

Fraud vs Consumer Dispute

What Happened

SituationRoute
Someone contacted you and took money, OTP, or PINBank + cybercrime.gov.in (fraud)
Order never arrived or refund is pending, no one contacted youGrievance officer, NCH 1915, then consumer commission
Offered a 'Meesho job' or reselling scheme that asks for moneyTreat as fraud; report to cybercrime.gov.in and Meesho

Does It Cost Anything to Report This?

No. The helpline, the grievance officer, cybercrime.gov.in, and filing on e-Jagriti as an individual are free or low-cost.

Can You Do This Without a Lawyer?

Yes. A lawyer is worth considering only for larger sums or if your bank and the platform both deny responsibility.

What Happens After You Report?

  • Your bank assesses liability for any unauthorised transactions
  • A prompt cyber crime report can lead to a freeze on the receiving account
  • The NCH forwards genuine complaints to the company and seeks a resolution
  • The consumer commission can order a refund and compensation

Key Takeaways

  • “Meesho scam” can mean a failed order, a fake helpline, or a fake scheme — each has a different remedy.
  • Never share OTP, UPI/ATM PIN, or CVV with anyone claiming to be Meesho.
  • For fraud, go to your bank and cybercrime.gov.in; for a failed order, use the grievance officer, NCH 1915, and e-Jagriti.
  • Small refund amounts are often used as bait — the size of the refund is no reason to lower your guard.

Frequently Asked Questions
