“Invest in our mutual fund scheme — 3% a month, capital guaranteed.” A “fund manager” sends a brochure, an app link, and a UPI ID. Real mutual funds work very differently: they are run by registered asset management companies, invest through regulated channels, and cannot promise returns. When a “mutual fund” offer looks like a guaranteed monthly income, it is usually a fraud borrowing the mutual fund name.

How Real Mutual Funds Work

  • Registered fund houses — mutual funds and their asset management companies are regulated by SEBI
  • No guaranteed returns — returns depend on the market, and offer documents carry a market-risk warning
  • Official channels — you invest through the fund house, its registrar, a registered distributor or a recognised platform, with money going to the fund’s verified account
  • Verified payment handles — SEBI has introduced UPI IDs ending in “@valid” for registered mutual funds and brokers, and a SEBI Check tool for validating UPI IDs and bank accounts

Common Fake Mutual Fund Patterns

  • The “guaranteed return” scheme — fixed monthly or weekly income promised in the name of a fund
  • The cloned fund or app — a copy of a real fund’s name and logo with a link-only app
  • The “redemption” call — a caller says you must pay a fee or tax to redeem units. SEBI has also flagged fraudsters impersonating investors to redeem units, which is why keeping KYC details safe matters
  • The personal-account payment — a “distributor” asks you to transfer money to an individual instead of the fund

If You Have Already Paid

01
Don't Pay Again
No 'redemption' or 'tax' fee
02
Check With the Real Fund House
Use its official website or helpline
03
Call Your Bank
Report each payment
04
Report on 1930
Or cybercrime.gov.in
05
Consider a SCORES Complaint
If a registered entity is involved
Step 1: Stop Payments

No genuine fund house asks you to pay a fee to a personal account to redeem units.

Step 2: Verify With the Fund House Directly

Contact the fund house through its official website or customer care (not the number in the message) to confirm whether you actually hold any investment with it.

Step 3: Report Transfers to Your Bank

Give your bank the payment details and ask it to block further debits and flag the receiving account.

Step 4: File a Cyber Crime Complaint

Use cybercrime.gov.in or 1930, attaching brochures, app links, chats and payment proof.

Step 5: Complain to SEBI Where Relevant

If a SEBI-registered fund house, distributor or intermediary was involved in wrongdoing, lodge a complaint on SEBI SCORES.
