You installed a loan app, took a small amount, and now the messages are threatening: repay far more than you borrowed or your contacts will receive morphed photos and “fraud” messages about you. Loan app blackmail is not debt collection — it is extortion and intimidation, and it is usually run by operators who do not meet the rules for regulated lenders. Being blackmailed does not make you the wrongdoer.
For lenders regulated by the RBI, the digital lending rules require the lender to stay responsible for the app and any lending service provider, to disclose all charges in a Key Fact Statement, to disburse funds directly into your bank account, and to keep to limits on what data an app can collect — including not gathering your contact list, media files or call logs without proper consent. The RBI also publishes a directory of digital lending apps deployed by regulated lenders, which you can use to check an app’s claimed association. An app that isn’t there, and that blackmails borrowers, is operating outside these protections.
Paying an inflated demand rarely ends the threats; new demands usually follow. If you genuinely borrowed from a regulated lender, the actual principal and lawful charges remain a separate matter from the harassment.
Screenshot threats, morphed images, call logs, the app’s name and developer details, payment receipts, and the numbers that contacted you and your contacts.
A short message to close contacts that any message about you from these numbers is a blackmail attempt and should be ignored and forwarded to you.
Report at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930, attaching the evidence. If images of you are involved, mention that clearly in the complaint.
For apps linked to unauthorised lenders, the RBI’s Sachet portal accepts complaints. For a regulated lender, use the RBI’s complaint system at cms.rbi.org.in after complaining to the lender.
Uninstall the app only after saving the evidence, then review your phone’s permissions and change passwords for anything the app could have reached, such as messaging or email accounts.

Yes. Threatening to circulate images or defame you to force payment can amount to extortion, criminal intimidation and defamation, along with offences under the IT Act.
Paying an inflated demand rarely stops the threats. If you genuinely owe a regulated lender, deal with the legitimate amount through official channels while reporting the harassment.
RBI’s digital lending rules restrict what data regulated lenders’ apps may collect, including contact lists and media files, without proper consent. Unregulated apps ignore such limits.
Check whether it appears in the RBI’s directory of digital lending apps and whether the lender is a bank or NBFC registered with the RBI.
Save evidence, report it on 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in mentioning the images, and consider legal help. Do not pay to have them deleted.
